Autism: Can I make friends in a caring system?

I have PDD-NOS (autism) and want to know how to make friends.

I Know someone for example who want to make this world a "better place." -she helps me bacause of her ideals. Is she/ or will she become a friend?

Is is possible for me to make friends if others just have sympathy or interest in autism? Surley these contacts could never become a real freindship?

you are making this way too complicated, relax and let relationships happen.

It is possible for you to make friends. I have a best friend whose son has Asperger's Syndrome. He is a very caring boy and very smart too. You just have to be you and others will accept you.

yes they can be real friends. the person you refer to might not (ask her), but someone else will. my son has Asperger's and has real friends. not many, but ones that really care. find someone that has a common interest. they are more likely to be a friend. good luck!

My brother has autism and he has loads of friends just be your self and they wont be bothered by the small fact.

It sounds like you are doing fine. Everyone has a difficult time making real friends. If you share an interest with someone who wants to make the world a better place, there is no reason why you can't be friends. It would just be helpful if you would let her know if you have issues with certain things (like spinning ceiling fans in her home or something like that). What do you like to do? Can you volunteer somewhere, where you can meet other people who share your interests? Do you like animals (you could volunteer to learn to groom horses), environmental projects (trail repair in a park), helping handicapped children (not necessarily low functioning autistics - but perhaps kids with cancer)?
I am reading a wonderful book written by an autistic woman called Temple Grandin (PhD), called "Animals in Translation". She also wrote "Thinking in Pictures." This woman is amazing. I hope you get a chance to read her books.

Hi Kim,
My name is Marla and my son was autistic,he never spoke and learned how to sign then he taught me and his sibligs to sign.Once we learned he began to speak, but I never told anyone about his special gift and people treated him normally. Never tell people of your special gift just let yourself be yourself and if it is meant too be than it shall be. No one in this world is perfect, but everyone has a special gift that God has blessed them with. Yours is just better than the rest. Find out what your special gift is and if it is making this world a better place than get together with those who share your interest and not your wickness. You are just like the rest of us just smarter.

I have autism and I had some really good friends. I met a lot of good people who became my freinds at chruch. My very best friend was my tutor. I needed a tutor in high school because of my disability. She knew alot about autism and she knew how to help me.

Hello Kim. I am really curious on what are your symptoms. Since I thought people with autism could not communicate. I think you should not think about what reason is all this people approaching you. It does not matter if they want to make the world a better place, they have sympathy or interest in autism. You should give them a chance. Some of them will become friends and some will not. Be opened. I am a very shy person, and have made huge efforts in meeting people. I try to get involved in different activities and sports. Please tell me about your symptoms (Argentox2@yahoo.com)

Do not feel bad I have Asperger's Syndrome, and I have a friend. You know it is like other people said just be yourself, let loose. and talk to people a little bit, and you will find that special friend for you.
