Question about autism spectrum disorder?

Where does autism fit on the autistic spectrum disorders?.. like is it one of the most severe form of spectrum disorder or does it depend on how severe the case of autism is??

im writing a report and I'm a bit confused with the autistic spectrum disorder list..

This is pretty much the order:

PDD-NOS is a diagnosis for people who are well-described by the "PDD" label, but can't be categorized by any other disorder. It is usually milder than autism and has similar symptoms to autism, with some symptoms present, and others absent.

Asperger's Syndrome - individuals are characterized by social isolation and eccentric behavior in childhood. There are impairments in two-sided social interaction and non-verbal communication. Though grammatical, their speech may sound peculiar due to abnormalities of inflection and a repetitive pattern.

Classic Autism - Which shows problems with: 1) social interaction, 2) verbal and nonverbal communication, and 3) repetitive behaviors or interests. In addition, they will often have unusual responses to sensory experiences, such as certain sounds or the way objects look. Each of these symptoms runs the gamut from mild to severe.

Autistic Savant - (historically described as idiot savant) is a person with both autism and Savant Syndrome. Savant Syndrome describes a person having both a severe developmental or mental handicap but with extraordinary mental abilities not found in most people. This means a lower than average general intelligence (IQ) but very high narrow intelligence in one or more fields.

Then there are the rare forms: Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder.

Autism can be very mild or very severe. It can fit anywhere on the spectrum.
Mild autism may just be a slight language issue, some social aversion or some food aversion. Severe autism may be 100% non-verbal, sensory issues, and severe social aversion.

Autism is a very interesting subject, good luck with your report.

Rett Syndrome is the most severe ASD. And with autism severity varies from person to person.

not a doctor just a mom of a 32 yr. old with autism spectrum disorder. Classic is just that . Spectrum disorder is like 6 degrees of separation you think you are going in a direction that will take you farther away but then you find yourself right back to basic autism. No matter what road you take you are led right back to basic autism-the roads that branch out are the spectrum. Signs and symptoms change-but it all leads back to basic autism.

Autism Spectrum Disorder means they have Autism. The spectrum comes into play because there are so many different areas that Autistic people can have and display. Some are mild, some are very Autistic. Every child is different with Autism, so they made this spectrum to help with treating and working with these children.
