Son misdiagnosed as Autistic? |
My son was diagnosed with mild autism last year, but both myself, my fiance, and his teacher have serious doubts this is the case. They used one standardized test for Asperger's that's it. His language and motor skills are behind, he has high and low mood swings (for the past two weeks he has slept most of the day), his voice and emotions are flattened, and talks to things that are not there. He is often irritable at school and has no interest in making friends. Although he tested at normal age level on academics (he's 6 years old), he's often in trouble for hitting and kicking others, and grabbed a girl's crotch the other day at school (we are very strict about what he watches and hears at home, and has never been abused). We're very worried about the hypersexuality, the hitting, and the talking to things that don't exist. We're also afraid that there is a risk of suicide when he get older. What can we do if we feel he's been misdiagnosed? We feel it's something more serious. This could very well be Asperger's, but it sounds more like bipolar disorder. Take him somewhere else and have him retested. Look for a pediatric phsycologist, and tell them that you think it might be bipolar. The voice and emotions can be either Aspie or bipolar, talking to things that aren't there can be either one as well. Having problems at school is typical of both, too, because they view the world differently, and no matter how hard people try they just can't always conform. The violence is common in bipolar, but can also be indicative of oppositional defiance disorder, which sometimes goes with Asperger's. Either way, your dealing with serious problems, so you need to find someone who will retest him, and do a more thorough job. Im not an expert on autism, but he does not sound typical of an Autism sufferer. I would want a second opinion. Ask your doctor if you can be referred to a child pychologist and also a neurologist. Not even knowing the child I feel too that there is more to this; My daughter at age 3 had indications that she was in the spectrum of autism. She had delayed speech, was extremely shy and even afraid of people, and was afraid of loud noise. The developmental pediatriacian told me to get an occupational therapist for my daughter. It was really devastating to hear about her diagnosis but instead of following her advice, I enrolled her to a regular school and I patiently taught her the alphabets, colors, numbers, the basics. Now she has overcome all her symptoms and is as normal as everybody else. I guess the parents know what is best for their children. Your faith in your child can make a lot of difference. Who knows a child best? The parents and teachers. Take him to a behavior specialist. Hello there, I hope I can assist you. My wish is to be positive so I will just tell you in the order I believe is most helpful. My son displayed most unusual behaviours, mannerisms and responses or lack of from an early age. Even though yourself, your fiance and your sons teacher have doubts about the possibility of Aspergers my husband and I only wish we could have been told that as our son is no longer with us, he actually did commit suicide (Please do not let this worry you, you can help your son and yourselves so much by knowing it is possibly Aspergers now rather than too late) when he was 26 years old. He was born in 1976 and it wasnt until he was almost 19 that by some fluke a community case manager he had at the time hit on it and took him for diagnosis. We were told then in late 1990's that there was no cure and it was only just still a "literature" thing in the medical world. A lot of harm and damage had been caused to not only our son but the rest of us due to him being incorrectly diagnosed previously as having "personality disorder" I didnt believe that one I can tell you. We only found out about Asperger Support Groups after he had died - not one so called professional person in his latter years had ever even informed us about that or steer our son in their direction. We were staying in UK at the time and there turned out to be an ASPERGER NORFOLK which is in Norfolk UK and where I live in Australia there are Asperger Support groups now in every state. More males are affected than females. I would like to keep in touch with you if possible. My life has to go on but if only we had had the help then that is now available. Every individual person in the world is unique the same as no two Aspergers are the same, it does sound like Aspergers to me, you will be so much better off all of you for knowing and understanding it as we had such a struggle. If you want to get in touch with me personally I am more than willing for this, Im not a doctor, just a Mum who has to keep going. mandatory euthanasia |
