Where can I take my son to get looked at that is close to Wichita, KS?

My step son is 7. He does not talk. He can hear. We only have him every other weekend. His mother does not seem to be conserned about this. I worry about him and what kind of future he will have. There is a reason why he doesn't talk and I need to know why? Could it be Autism?

You are absolutely correct to be concerned. Can't say if its autistic disorder or not from this limited information. Here are a couple of places to call to get a referral to someone there who has experience working with kids:

Hope this is helpful to you.

There could be many reasons why he doesn't talk. While he may be able to hear noises, he may not be able to hear voices clearly. Sometimes a traumatic event will cause a child not to speak. It could also be some form of autism. Doesn't his mother know the reason why? Doesn't his father know? At 7 years old, your the only one who has taken an interest in this child's inability to speak. God bless you. I don't live near KS, but there should be a hospital that specializes in children's medicine. Most big cities have a children's hospital. There might be one in Wichita. Try calling 411 and ask them. Good luck to you and the child.
P.S. You could try getting the phone number of The Children's Advocacy Center,Inc. it is located 123 W. Adams, Pittsburg,KS they might be able to refer you to a hospital. You can also do a search on your state site it is www.kansas.gov use keyword children to get listings.
