Why do people refer to others like me as an epidemic?

i have aspergers which is in the category of autism... it hurts my feelings and upsets me to see people think i'm an epidemic! i'm a person, just because i think differently and do things differently doesnt make non aspies/auties better than us! so why do you treat us this way?!

Ok... not the responses I thought I would get... so uh I guess I'll put it to a vote since I like both answer deals...

hi hun , i think people tend to treat people like you the way they do because they dont really understand whats wrong and how it effects you , some people dont stop to think that your still the same as everyone else with the same feelings for some reason some people think the feelings go out the window when you have something wrong like that . im sorry you get such negativity from people i no its no exscuse about not understanding but most people really dont instead they judge . if people was to understand what was wrong i think they wouldnt treat you so bad . dont let these people upset you ! you still get on with life im sure you do and you hold your head high and probley live a more fuller life than most of the jackasses that take the mick !

take care

It is certainly hurtful and sad that aspies and auties are labeled as an epidemic. I do not think that people say this to intentionally hurt someone, but that does not chage the effect of their words. I believe what some are saying is that ASD's (Autistic Spectrum Disorders) are being diagnosed at a much higher rate than they were. Because of this, the word "epidemic" has been used, although incorrectly. Higher rates of ASD's can have numerous causes. Please do not allow others to make you feel badly with their word choices. People are often unthinking and hurtful.
