Could stress be causing this horrible pain in right side back of head?

I have been having horrible pain in the back of my head only on the right side. It is about an inch or inch and a half up from where skull starts and always on right side. The pain is debilitating. I sit here holding my head with tears in my eyes. I lost my health insurance as my husband is layed off from union job right now so I can not see a doctor. I did apply for New Jersey Family Health Care but I could only get it for my 22 month old. I should also state that I am under a lot of stress as my 22 month old son just diagnosed with autism. I am dealing with grief and anger and very busy with all of his treatments and therapy and trying to get him into progams at local hospital. Yesterday morning I was sitting in the hospital with him waiting for his appointment and the pain was unbearable. Any idea what could cause this. No over the counter pain relievers help. Thank you.

This is not a tension headache. Tension headaches wrap around the entire skull beginning at ear level and feel like a vise is being tightened. Since you stated that the pain is at the back of your head, you may have a ocular migraine. I imagine that you have spent significant time under the florescent lights which only add to the pain.
Many new prescriptions are on the market for migraines however since you do not have health insurance, your best bet would be to darken the rooms that you are in, quiet the area and take Motrin every four hours. The pain will subside, however, it will take some time.

This is what one call tension headache or some call migraine. It's usually caused by stress or insufficient sleep or to certain kinds of food. I understand u are under a lot of stress dealing with everything but in order for the migraine to stop, u have to learn to relax...it works for me...

Yes, it can be caused by stress. I get the same thing, but I can feel it starting to creep up the back of my neck right before it hits. And I had a CT scan done to make sure I didn't have a brain aneurysm, and I didn't. The only thing that works for me is a prescription drug called Butalbital/apap/ caffeine/codeine 20 mg.

It maybe from stress. But I am hesitant to leave it at that. You should consider going to the ER the next time you experience this. Although you do not have insurance it is important, you have a child to think about. A case worker should be assigned to you to work with you as far as not having insurance.

Barbara, what good r u doing ur austistic child and ur family if u r not taking care of ur self first. Hospitals have free clinics in the USA and there is never any excuse in u not taking care of ur health. Pls check with ur nearest hospital and take an extending hand if u have too don't let pride get in ur way either. Autisim is a dificult illness to have to deal with in any family, stress over what others seem r small things r not so small for those who r suffering from it. Pls see a physician before u hurt ur self or neglect ur child any further by not seeing about urself first and just try to be the best parent u can be by doing what u r doing asking for help. Good hunting.

You've grieved long enough. Time to move on. There are joys to having an autistic child. When you wallow in misery, you miss out on these joys. Life isn't always peachy and you have the opportunity to help another person to learn to function in a society that is totally alien to him. It won't be easy but it also won't get any better for you until you accept your new life and move on. Your child needs you. This would probably help with your headaches as well.
