Atrial Fibrillation and Pacemaker?

My uncle is in the hospital right now and they are inserting a chest tube for a collapsed lung as we speak at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, If I could be there I would be, but since I'm not, I have some questions to ask...

Do you know anyone who has had to get a pacemaker due to Atrial Fibrillation, and if so, was it successful?

Of the people I have spoken with, I have heard that it hasn't been...I'm worried he won't make it.

A-fib by itself usually isn't a deadly rhythm. For a lot of people the only treatment is taking an aspirin to prevent blood clots. I assume his is more symptomatic than that. Pacemakers are great, and if they don't work there are other options, such as different medications, or other procedures.
Don't worry too much about it. Worry more about the collapsed lung.

A-Fib is actually a fairly common and treatable condition.

The atrium of your heart doesn't beat in sync with the rest of your heart and sort of "quivers"

Usually controlled by medication but other times a pacemaker is used.
So what the pacemaker does is sends a tiny little shock to the atrium... to make it get back in order with the rest of the heart.

My great grandfather lived with his pacemake for 10 years to the age of 94. And I have patients every day living normal lives with them.

They have really come a long way!!

Don't stress too much. Ofcourse there are always complications with any sort of procedure, pace makers are almost becoming standard practice!

Good Luck!!!
