Atrial fibrillation and seizures? |
my friend has atrial fibrillation. she got shocked into a regular rhythm on friday but had diarrhea and vomiting then reverted to the fibrillation. can anyone tell me what's going on and what her options are? usually cardioversion with iv medications, betablockers, to help stabilize along with an anticoagulant. when this fails then ablasion can be done. some people can live fairly well with a-fib. they are asymptomatic though. if she's symptomatic..then they will probably repeat the cardioversion or try different meds to control it. seizures are a separate problem. how long has she had them? if new may be from medication reaction, possibly from a clot in the brain as well. otherwise probably an underlying preexisting condition. any head trauma history? i recommend talking to a neurologist. As you now know people can live with atrial fib, but not well. With this condition people do not have their normal levels of energy, they get tired easily and there is a risk for blood clots. The fact that she reverted may mean she may need a more aggressive form of treatment. There is a procedure called ablation where the nidus or the source of the fib. is destroyed and depending what is destroyed a pacemaker might have to be implanted. I have a cousin that had this done and he is in his sixties and doing well with it. atrial fib and seizures are two seperate things. Seizures are caused by brain impulses. People can live just fine with atrial fib, but it causes pooling of the blood and therefore, can cause blood clots that result in heart attacks or strokes. It sounds like they attempted cardioversion and it didn't work, they may try it again. Many people take medication for this digoxin....her options are to try to get back into sinus rythm(reg heartbeat) or have a heavy risk of having problems. There is a new procedure for converting patients, I am not an expert on that field. good luck Cardiac SUrgery and Treatment is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges cardiac surgery like ablation of the sinus node for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.I have also read that they arrange financing for american patients. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. |
