Also besides something like Cardizem, they'll probably put you on a blood thinner like warfarin (yes rat poison) or a similar drug to reduce the chance of stroke. The risk of stroke comes from the fact the atria are fibrillating so the blood in them pools, forming clots that travel to the brain causing a stroke.

They can also take you to the cath lab and shock the crap out of you while your asleep to get you to cardiovert.
Then there are the pills. Usually they start out with a calcium channel blocker such as Cardizem.
