What should your blood sugar count be? |
I was in hospital for 15 hours while I was in atrial fibrillation. They took my blood count to see how much warfarin I had. While looking at the results the nurse suddenly said 鈥?oh goodness鈥?and called the doctor over. She then said my blood sugar count was 1 and that it should be 6 and quickly gave me some sweet gloopy stuff to swallow. Eventually my count rose to 6. Looking at my notes I noticed the doctor had written 鈥淨uery diabetes鈥? All I can find about diabetes uses 3 figure counts so now I am confused. I also had a chest infection at the time. What is this count of 1 - 6 ? The test might have been a hemoglobin A1C which would be in the normal range up to 6 and a 1 would be low causing you to be given something to bring it up. You were in the hospital for other reasons which might have caused the low blood sugar. Your doctor will 'query diabetes' or test you for diabetes when your other problems are taken care of as diabetes is not the primary problem at the time. The query means nothing except to remind the doctor to check it out when everything is back to normal. talk to a professional I am sure that there are factors in place to consider (height, weight, age, ect) Different institutions uses different units of measurements. That hospital might be using mmol/L as a unit of measurement, the normal value of which is 4.22 - 6.11 mmol/L. Your sugar level of 1 is too low that is why they gave you some sweet stuff to increase your sugar level. Another unit of measurement is miligrams/deciliter , normal value of which is 80-120 mg/dl. |
