Resting Heart rate at 98, is it normal?

I'm a normal 28 yr old guy and weight 160 pounds (74 kgs), 5 feet 11 inches tall. I have some body fat and have not been exercising for some time now. My resting heart rate is 98 and when I start to jog on the treadmill the heart rate goes up to 176 in just 2 minutes.

I read that 70 to 100 is normal resting heart rate but mine is on the upper limit. I used to be an athlete during my school days often winning the 100 metres race.

I heard that a person should not reach his max heart rate when performing any physical activity (Max Heart rate = 220 - age) and my max is 192.

I feel normal but am surprised why my resting heart rate is 98 which is pretty high. Any of you guys have a high rate like mine?

i was totally relaxed when i had my measurement, did not have any caffeine that day, no physical activity just a bit of walking. but i slept only a few hours the previous night, also my blood pressure that i took together with the resting heart rate showed 135 over something (unsure)

That's really pretty fast for a young, healthy man. Are you certain you're truly at rest when you take it? Try taking it before you consume any caffeine or eat, possibly even on waking naturally (not jolted by your alarm). Test it several times a day, when you're seated and have been for a while (at work, watching TV, etc.)

It could be that you're so unfit that your heart muscle is weak, but that doesn't seem likely. More probable is that you're catching a count when you've had coffee, a Coke, or eaten recently.

your metabolism is fast

it is not usual to have a heart rate that high at rest. maybe one out of 20 pts i encounter. rare, but not non-existant. did you have any alcoholic beverages the night before? my other concern is that it goes to the 170's after 2 minutes of exercise....definitely NOT normal. you should seek medical attention and just get a clean bill of health and ease your concsience. what if you were out on a usual day, and someone needed your help in an emergency? your adrenline would pump, you would exert yourself not thinking about yourself, and you could potentially hurt yourself. the good news is that your blood pressure sounded just fine. 130's is acceptable. find out of you have any family member that have had cardiac problems before. if so, that increases your risk 10-fold. i hope this helped. good luck and get checked out!
