Why do I get out of breath so easily when I RUN?

I am 60 kgs 5'5 feet 20 year old woman. I have been eating healthy and exersizing for the last two months or so. I briskwalk / run everyday for about an hour..

However I have a problem!...I get 'out of breath' more easily than other people. I get out of breath after 5 minutes of running...its not that I am tired or anything...I used to be an athlete in past. But its like I am not breathing properly...I cant get oxygen in or smthn!...its very freaky...however I was also wondering that this might be because I have some extra pounds to shed. What do you think? How can I prevent this, and how can I run for longer without feeling out of breath?

This is what happened to me. I hit age 18 or so and started getting winded when before I'd been an athlete. There are many causes of fatigue while running, and I'll tell you my problems and then (hopefully) link you to some sites that might provide more information so you can figure out what it is.

With me, most of my problem was allergies. When I went outdoors to exercise or went to "gymnasiums" to exercise, I'd become winded right away. I'm allergic to almost every tree, flower and plant in existence. I'm also allergic to neoprene and the plastics used in making exercie equipment. So, breathing in the pollen or plastic fumes really keep my body from getting enough oxygen, and I have the lactic acid buildup that you would normally expect after an hour of running hard.

Another reason for my fatigue is it turns out I have an auto-immune disorder, which is closely related to my allergies. When you have an auto-immune disorder, your body is basically "allergic to itself", and your immune system begins attacking usually specific organs. For me, my auto-immune disorder is called Fibromyalgia. It usually kicks in around age 20 for women (men are unlikely to get it, although it is not impossible). Fibromyalgia's main symptom is fatigue and pain in your connective tissue, because it is your body attacking your connective tissue. So certainly if your body attacks muscles, you'll be more prone to lactic acid build-up, plus your body is "sick". If you've ever had influenza or food poisoning, then you'll know how it feels to have Fibromyalgia. I always feel like I do the day after I recover from the 'flu or food poisoning. I'm weak, I tire easily, and I'm sore. It's not fun, and I got diagnosed with it back in 1991. Some doctors feel there is a link between Fibromyalgia and Hypothyroidism. I do actually suffer from hypothyroidism.

Another cause could be asthma. My shortness of breath is due to asthma, but it is linked to my outdoor allergies. I have no asthma symptoms as long as I wear a mask outdoors. (I figured it out on my own one time when I was trying to enjoy our nature trail near our home. I figured if you can use a mask while vacuuming to avoid asthma (vacuums usually kick up a lot of dust), then wearing a mask outside should help keep me from having an allergic reaction to pollen in the air.) I can't jog with a mask on, since I can't get enough air to do it through the mask, but I can get relief from the asthma if I do a brisk walk.

I hope the above information and the sites below can help you.

I am glad I could help you out. Take care..S. Report It

You should first get a physical because running is very hard. Go slow, you will improve slowly and your improvement will suddenly be drastic.

Do or did you smoke? Go to doc just to check it out. I am going to feel the same way tomorrow I have not ran for four days. Joking aside get checked out and if there is nothing wrong just work your way up. Sprint are one of the better way to increase your endurance. Fast for as long as your can slow for as little as you can and do it all over again.

You might have asthma...have it checked out by your doctor.
