Astigmatism severity?

...my husband (38) has been getting pretty bad headaches for a few weeks now. We went to the Optometrist today, and his script reads:

Right: pl (or pd, not sure) : -1.25 X 135

Left : - 0.25 - 0.25 x 020

Is he a Lasik candidate? How bad is his astigmatism? And what does the pd or pl thing mean?

Thank you in advance for any info. I'm an R.N. but totally ignorant about this kind of stuff. He is also a Police Officer and I worry about him wearing glasses (fights, etc), and contacts are not an option.

Bonnie: Thank you, so much. I will show him your answer. It's not just fights I'm worried about, it is also him taking off on a foot chase and loosing a $250 sets of glasses! (We got the flexible rims, just in case). On a cop's salary, that is a lot of money!

This is a guy that rarely complains about any type of pain, but his recent headaches apparently have been bothering him quite a bit. I'd rather have him get Lasik if necessary, it would be less expensive than numerous sets of glasses

PL stands for plano which means zero. That means he is neither nearsighted or farsighted in his right eye but does have -1.25 diopters of astigmatism (mild to moderate amount). His left eye is a pretty low prescription. He could probably get Lasik in his Right eye but I would not touch his left eye. hope that helps

Yah he is suitable for lasik but maybe for the rite eye only. PL mean zero degree. Maybe he can get a spect for the astigm. it will help out in the headaches. Also that lasik might not be nessary as the astigm might help to cover or delay the use of multi focal lenses aka long sightness.
