What makes your astigmatism worse?

My optometrist said that my astigmatism is worse compared to 3 years ago. I thought that astigmatism is due to an irregularly shaped cornea or lens and that you're born with it. How can this get worse with age?

UMMMMMMMMm why didn't you just ask Doc??

HOT DOG

your eyes haven't settled yet- my eyes seem to get worse and worse every year too :(

stabbing my eye alwayz worsens it.

Squinting has alot to do with it. The strain on your cornea can affect it.

computer strain, tv... I am now farsighted as well as nearsighted and it is starting to equal out. My doctor says in a few more years, my eyes will be stable and I may be eligible for laser surgery. Finally, yes!

Regular corneal astigmatism means that the cornea (clear front of the eye) is not spherical like the top of a ball, but is elliptical like the back of a spoon. The "tip" of the spoon will focus some light off-center and can cause blurred vision or ghost images if the astigmatism is rather high.

Vision degradation due to corneal astigmatism tends to be greater in low light environments. When the pupil becomes large, light passing through the tip of the astigmatism reaches the light sensitive retina inside the eye and is "seen". If the pupil is small, the iris (colored portion) can block this errant light from reaching the retina and causing problems.

Corneal astigmatism is naturally occurring and like many components of your eye and vision can change over time. Corneal edema (inflammation) can cause or exacerbate astigmatism, as can dry eyes, allergies, and a dirty environment.

Lenticular astigmatism is when the natural crystalline lens inside the eye is similarly irregular. Lenticular astigmatism also occurs naturally. Rapid changes in lenticular astigmatism can indicate cataract formation. A cataract is when the crystalline lens becomes cloudy. Cataracts are commonly associated with age or significant trauma to the eye.

Astigmatism is normally corrected with glasses or toric contact lenses. Laser assisted surgery like Lasik is often able to correct common astigmatism.

A concern with progressive corneal astigmatism is that it can be the sign of a more serious problem called keratoconus. Keratoconus is when the cornea becomes weak, thin, and loses stability. Having an astigmatism does not automatically make keratoconus a suspect, but very rapidly changing and severe astigmatism located in the lower portion of your cornea can indicate a problem. Keratoconus patients often used rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses to help support the cornea and provide good vision. In difficult cases surgery can be recommended.

A comprehensive examination from a competent eye doctor can determine if your change in astigmatism is due to disease or just a natural part of an ever changing body. Since your eye doctor apparently did not mention any disease, it is reasonable to assume your change is normal. If you have additional concerns, ask your eye doctor.

Astigmatism can change throughout your life. Especially if you are under 21, your astigmatism is likely to change more than if you are over 21. HOWEVER, expect minor adjustments to your astigmatism year after year.

Typically speaking, the more astigmatism you have, the more stable it is.

"squinting" has zero effect.

barring eye disease (e.g. keratoconus and the like), corneal astigmatism does not usually change much over the course of your life. but LENTICULAR astigmatism can & does (as mentioned by lasikexpert)
