What causes astigmatism?

can astigmatism get worst as we age or stay the same? and how can i prevent it from getting worst?

Question #1: Astigmatism may be congenital or acquired. For those cases of acquired astigmatism, some of the causes include the weight of the upper eyelid resting against the eye, old corneal lacerations with resultant scarring, blunt trauma to the eye, scarring from infection, changes in the shape of the cornea after eye surgery and keratoconus.

Question #s 2 & 3: Typically astigmatism stays constant neither improving nor worsening.

Just for the record, astigmatism is a separate issue from hyperopia (far-sightedness) and myopia (near-sightedness). One can have astigmatism without either. Astigmatism is an irregularity in the shape of the cornea. Ideally it should be perfectly round, like the back of a spoon. Hyperopia and myopia concern the shape of the eyeball and not the cornea.

The cause of astigmatism is unknown. It is usually present from birth, and often occurs together with nearsightedness or farsightedness. A minor degree of astigmatism is considered normal and does not require correction. Astigmatism is very common.

I have astigmatism and its getting worse but my doctor says its because i sleep with my contacts or I'm not washing them right.........

I don't know what causes it though.

An astigmatism is where the cornea or lens is not even in all areas, so it may have areas that are flatter or steeper. It's usually present at birth but it can also be caused by eye injury or disease. Astigmatism ISN'T made worse by reading in poor light, sitting too close to the TV or squinting; these are common myths though. You can prevent it from worsening by wearing your glasses if you have and you can also get refractive surgery.

An astigmatism is what is a type of refractive error, where the eye isn't refracting light rays properly. So astigmatism is caused by the uneven refraction of light since the surface of the cornea or lens is uneven. Think of shining a flashlight on a smooth surface, and then shining a flashlight on a bumpy, steep and slopey surface. If your eye is curved too little, then hyperopia, or farsightedness develops. If your eye is curved too much the myopia, or nearsightedness develops. That is one of many possible causes of an astigmatism.

Astigmatism is refractions anomaly of so cold cornea. You must use spectacle with cylindrical lens.
