What's astigmatism?

i mean i just got prescripted glasses and they said i have astigmatism!!

Astigmatism is a specific distortion in the lens which makes vertical or horizontal lines seem darker than the other. During your eye exam, you were shown several crosshatch patterns and were asked if the vertical or horizontal lines seemed darker, and then the lens was flipped or rotated 90 degrees and you were asked again. If you saw one set of lines darker than the other and then after the lens was rotated, the opposite lines became darker, then you have this specific deformation in the lense. As I recall, it is a rippling of the surface on the inside of the cornea. The ripppling makes it harder for you to distinguish between closely spaced lines.

The problem comes with reading. A capital letter H, for example, can look like II if you see dark vertical and dim horizontal.

I think its when you see the letters or #'s like they are moving I think thats what it is. not sure though

i think its like u couldn't see as sharply as u could

Your eye is not shaped normally, so they gave you glasses to correct your vision so that lens focuses on your retina correctly.

I don't know the medical details, but I have it too (only ONE of the reasons I wear glasses).

If you look at something that has a bunch of thin lines all running parallel, they all seem to jump around and vibrate and squirm. When I'm not wearing my glasses, it's really annoying -- kinda hurts to look.

I know this isn't the full story, but that's the kind of situation where I most notice my astigmatism.

Try looking at the same things with and without your glasses, and maybe you'll see what I'm talking about.

A visual defect in which the unequal curvature of one or more refractive surfaces of the eye, usually the cornea, prevents light rays from focusing clearly at one point on the retina, resulting in blurred vision. Stigmatism means normal eye sight, the letter "a" in front of a word, that already has a meaning, simply means without or not. A-not Stigmatism-normal eye sight

i have astigmatism in my left eye the eye ball is oval rather than round ,i have very little sight out of that eye glases dont help
my brain has swithed it off th eoptician sais because the eye is no good

I have astigmatism in both eyes. Astigmatism is a vision condition that occurs when the front surface of your eye, the cornea, is slightly irregular in shape. This irregular shape prevents light from focusing properly on the back of your eye, the retina. As a result, your vision may be blurred at all distances.
If you go to American Optometric Association you could learn more. this is where i got the info. I really couldn't explain it in my own words so go to that site and look its really interesting..

ur mean. dont be so rude about answering questions
btw about your 15 years old and have never had a date. I SEE WHY! your too rude!

FAR SIGHTED....YOU CAN SEE THINGS AT A DISTANCE MORE CLEARLY THAN UP CLOSE
