What is astigmatism??

I have glasses, and I can't see clearly without them. How is astigmatism any different?
(Excuse my idiocy)

You are not an idiot. Astigmatism is an uneven surface of the cornea. Normally, the cornea is smooth and round like the back of a spoon. There are many conditions that cause irregularity of the corneal surface and it can be congenital.
Other vision defects, like myopia (near-sightedness) and hyperopia (far-sightedness) involve the length of the eye rather than the cornea.

Here's a good page for you:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astigmatism

It means that your eyeball is shaped wrong. Usually, you have a hard time focusing on things. I have 20/20 vision, but still have astigmatism and I have to look at street signs for like five seconds before I can read them.

Astigmatism is a quite common slight irregularity in the surface of the cornea. It basically just means that if light hits the slight irregularity, it bends it "funny" before it hits your retina in the back of your eye, causing a distortion.
