About how long does astigmatism last?

I went for an eye check up two days ago and the doctor said i have astigmatism and I'm going to have glasses.

I have astigmatism too. It last forever and has to do with your eyeshape. When the time comes and you feel like going from glasses to contacts you will most likely have to get hard contacts to help shape your eye but its only temporary and the astigmatism will last forever.

My optician said that sometimes it can go away because your eye muscles start to stretch the other way pulling your eye back. But its very unlikely. So yeah we're stuck with it. I think some companies do correction for it with lasers but Im not sure how they do it and if everyone can get it. Can't always get lenses either cos sometimes they don't fit.

I have had it since I was in my 20's I am now going to be 51. It varies from year to year like your eyesight, get worse them maybe better, then worse like your eyesight. I believe it is the curve of the lens, or the eye itself.

Having an astigmastism, means that the cornea is oval instead of round.

Astigmatism is for the rest of your life. The degree of astigmatism may change, but you'll always have it. It goes with near sightedness and you'll need to wear glasses the rest of your life... or contact lenses, unless you have a problem that can be surgically correccted.

Hey there, you seems to be a lot worried, there is nothing to feel bad about it, astigmatism will last forever,a few weeks back even i went for a check up and came to know that i'm having astigmatism ,now i'm wearing specktacles. dont fell bad about wearing a glass, if u ignore wearing it ,this condition will actually increase........good luck

As astigmatism means that the cornea of the eye is more football-shaped than round, it is not something that goes away by itself. Only eyeglasses or contact lenses will correct the distorted vision caused by astigmatism, unless you are a candidate for laser vision surgery, in which case this can be corrected. There are also some forms of contact lens therapy (orthokerotology) that have been known to reshape the cornea by gradually using a series of hard contact lenses, but I have tried that and my astigmatism eventually returned. If you're young and have the money-I would get the laser surgery. If you're over 40, like me, you will probably have to wear reading glasses anyway after having laser surgery. In that case, just get some nice glasses. Fortunately, wearing glasses doesn't have the stigma that it used to, and there are literally thousands of nice frames and ultra-thin lenses available now.

Astigmatism is not a temporary condition; its a condition where your cornea is shaped more like a football, than like a basketball. It causes blurriness at all distances; near and far. When it is present, it is generally there for the rest of your life. It can flucuate, but does not simply go away. If you have been diagnosed with astigmatism and you have been told that you need glasses to correct it, then you'll be wearing glasses to correct it until the day you die, unless you have some type of refractive surgery to correct it.

yeah for the most part it doesnt go away completely but as others have stated can change... personally i use to have a decent amount of astigmatism when i was 13, now i am 20 and my astigmatism is considered insignificant, technically they consider it not even there since its below .25...

so yeah it can change for the better!

It refers to the shape of the cornea being oval-like instead of round. A lot of things you see will look more blurry than usual , so glasses with lenses that correct astigmatism will help.

It generally lasts forever, but there are options for treating it. I have a high astigmatism (basically that's all I have), but have been able to see with glasses and "torric" contacts (special contacts made for people with agstigmatism). If you're like me and don't have much near or far-sightedness, you can still see most things but they are blurry. It's because the shape of your cornea is irregular.

You might also be a candidate for LASIK surgery to correct the imbalance. I didn't think I qualified, but I found an excellent and highly recommended surgeon who is able to perform the surgery. I have it done this Thursday!
