How to get a 14 year old to wear his glasses? |
3 years ago my son only needed to use reading glasses now his eyes are real bad legally blind at a distance but has no astigmatism he thinks he doesn't have to wear them all the time. Tell him to wear his glasses or you will take away privledges, such as no TV, phone, internet, being with friends, etc. And then, you MUST FOLLOW THROUGH. The problem with so many parents is that they are quick on the threats but they never follow through. this is a tough one. you just need to be patient and show the 3 year old the difference. You may want to try getting glasses with a restraint on the back so they don't fall off as easily. Staple them to his face then pour hot glue into his eyes then say hahahahahahah you suck!!!!! Did he pick out the glasses? He is at a tough time in his life and glasses may look "ugly" to him You can always tell them that their eyes are going to get worse and worse until they need to wear them all the time and they will be very thick. I would try the contacts. I think once he tries it he will discover it is the solution for him. Let him make his own decision on this i mean they are his eyes and he may be getting made fun of if he wants to be blind just leave it up to him, i think that would be you fighting a loosing battle? hell wear them when he realizes he needs them. if he likes emo music, you can make him wear emo clothes. thick black framed glasses would fit the clothing style. reverse psychology...ask him if he will ONLY wear his glasses at home.....he will get so used to the correction of his vision..that he will WANT to wear them outside of the house eventually Do tell him that he would go blind if he doesn;t! this is no joke! Get a load of photos with his favorite film stars that also wear glasses, try sneaking in a few cartoon characters (if you are good with a pen you can draw them on). no advice needed, he can either see or not. that should be incentive enough. let him pick out a pair of frames that he likes. also, have him try the contacts....it will be wierd at first, but he might like them I started wearing glasses when I was nine and rarely wore them. Truth is at 14 you can not make him wear them. The leverage you might have is that when he turns 16 he might want to drive and you suffer many more consequences of not wearing your glasses when driving then by what a parent might do. If he is ever allowed to drive it will obviously require him to wear glasses. If his vision will be too poor to drive, there has to be something he will want to do that vision will help. Are there other problems that may have caused him to give up on life? Have you concidered lasik surgery its awesome. Assuming he is in school. Talk to his teachers and reward him for wearing the glasses. But you have to be the parent, and make him wear them when he is around you. Then if he won't you can start taking away privledges. My 13 year old couldn't even handle putting drops in her eyes or getting anything near her eyes. She decided to try contacts for sports, and hasn't regretted it once. I NEVER thought I'd see the day she could even touch her eye. Maybe just see if he wants to try one pair of them(disposables) he might change his mind after that. let him pick out the glasses he like the best, and tell him thta chicks dig guys in glasses. Me, I stood at the door of the house, prepped their backpacks for school, held out their EYEGLASSES to put on, and WATCHED Them get on the bus -- then looked in my Rural Mailbox. If they were placed there when they got on the bus, this Older SINGLE MOM got in the car with the GLASSES, DROVE to their school, CALLED them out of 1st Class, and WAITED while they PUT THEM ON FOR THE DAY! I started wearing glasses at age 12. I started wearing contacts at around age 14 as well. I also was uncomfortable with putting something in my eyes, but at the same time I was tired of wearing heavy glasses on my face. You might see if your doctor's office has free sample contacts (usually one pair of disposables) with an eye exam. That way he can try them out before you purchase them. He might not mind taking them in and out once he tries it. Complement him on how good he looks in them. Our nephew got glasses, and we all told him how he looked exactly like Harry Potter. Well, he loves Harry Potter so he thought that was really cool. He now wears his glasses with no problem. At 14 everything makes you feel self conscious - I hated wearing my glasses then too. Maybe you could go and sit with him while he tries contacts for the first time, or even try some on in front of him so he will feel more comfortable putting them in. Or as others have said, let him pick out his own frames if he hasn't already. Also tell him that if he doesn't wear them, he looks ridiculous squinting to see things - my parents had to tell me that a couple of times. It sucked, but it worked. childs in this age always love to do same things as adults do, and dady do is the best for him, try to make his dad wear a glass also and the boy shall try to wear one also, or u try to wear and show him that it is so nice thing, and if u do good things u shall got him a new glass as a gift, but never try force to let him wear it, i wear glasses from 15 years and know well |
