Why is it so bad to sleep with contacts in? |
I use soft ACUVUE Advance for Astigmatism contacts and my eye doctor said I shouldn't sleep with contacts in. I accidentally fell asleep with them in but when I woke up nothing really felt "wrong"..... why is it bad to sleep with them in?! corneal neovascularization exactly Report It They say it because not enough oxygen is reaching the eye. I sleep in mine all the time, and have done so for years, use them past expiration and everything - no problems. I would follow doc's orders anyways. Because when you sleep with the contacts in it blocks oxygen from your eyes. It also can lead to infection if you continue to sleep in them everynight for a long period of time. Because it doesnt let oxygen get to the eyes. However, I have contacts at the moment that you wear for four weeks then change them, sleeping in them too. I do take them out once a week to clean them, but apparently they are softer and let more oxygen through. I have had them now for about two years and had no probs! (touch wood!) Ask your optician about them. Think about it...you have a dry piece of plastic in your eye for long periods of time. Your eye wont be getting enough oxygen. the contact will have a lot of dirt building up on it as well, opening you up to all sorts of infection. |
