Why so much pain and burning,in a amputees stump? |
why does my husbands above the knee stump hurt and burn so bad,has been a amputee for 30 years My opinion. I think he needs to see his doctor. It could be the phantom pain or it could be a blood clot or some silly but serious thing. Good Luck. They are still studying it but they think what it is is the brain continues to send signals to the now amputated limb. When it doesn't get a response, it sort of "freaks out" and bombards the area with even more signals trying to make contact. All these signals in a concentrated area overstimulate the nerve endings causing the pain...or cold...or heat.. whatever the brain has chosen to send. It's called phantom pain. I am sorry you lost your leg........now i'm sort of scared b/c i may be having to have knee surgery and i DO have to have a total hip replacement???????????????? ...although your fingers are gone, the nerves in yoyr am are still there and donn't know the fingers are not there, my dad had this when he lost his leg, pain killers and massage are what he did,... Everyone I know who is a double below knee amputee walks again. You still have your knees it's going to be easier you won't have to use as much energy. You'll be walking and running ... when i was in the hospital after my motorcycle accident, my nurses wanted to put up all my rails and i told them not to as i am clostphobia and i would be ok with only the upper body rails and they... If you are talking a human leg replacement - that is still very experimental. Only being tried in certain european countries.
