How do people pretend to be leg amputees?

By binding up a leg (or both) with elastic bandages, ropes, or what-not, and dressing in clothing baggy enough to hide the fact that their leg is just bent up behind them.

I think the more interesting question would be WHY do people do this. That would elicit a whole raft of responses, I think.
