Support networks for family's of amputees? |
My brother has recently had his leg amputated below the knee due to diabetic problems. It is very hard knowing how to help him, although he appreciates my expressions of care. He will find adapting to life hard. Is their a source of information for advice - my brother does not want to meet other sufferers in groups etc at this stage. I know from past experience that it is those around such people who "suffer" as much as the amputee him/herself. I can't offer any advice toyour brother, because only an amputee could, but I will say to you, be realistic, and be in tune with his feelings ... there is nothing worse than an over-sympathetic "relative/friend" who has become so detached form his feelings, that it makes it harder for your brother in the long term, because he knows that you are doing your best .... but it ain't quite good enough! I'm assuming that he will have had rehab physio whilst in hospital? Have a chat with his physio. They should be aware of any local groups near to you and will more than likely be involved in running them. Have a look at these websites too... and what he needs most is support of those who have suffered the same as he is. |
