It is really bugging the heck out of me!! thank yo so much. if you are an amputee how has amputation changed ur life. I am only 14 so it has changed mine a lot. also when will feel up to doing things with my friends? when the time comes how should I start going out in public with out a problem?? thanks for your help and I hope you have a great day!!

I am not getting fitted for a prosthetic for a while so how long until i wanna go out on crutches or a wheelchair?? thanks!!!!!!!!

Kara,

Glad to see you made it through the operation in good shape, (all things considered).

I've heard that amputees still have the sensation of a missing limb being there, however, I've never heard about the "itching". I believe your subconscious still believes the limb is still there.

Your "itching" will probably continue for a while, and slowly dissipate. It reminds me of a hernia operation I had YEARS ago. About 6-7 days after the surgery, I got these random spasms in the area of the incision. Found out later that the nerve endings were "reconnecting" themselves. It was a real pain for a day or two, but after that, I'd laugh. It was so funny to suddenly have a jerk shoot through my upper body. Folks would see me get these "jolts" and wonder what the hell was going on. After I explained the situation, we'd all have a chuckle.

My guess that this will continue to bug the bejeeezus out of you for a day or two, then you'll start chuckling like I did. If it becomes a real problem, please consult your doctor's office. I'm sure they have run across this many, many times.

Relax and take things day by day. Enjoy the luxury of sleeping late and watching TV. Don't dwell too much on the big picture for a while. Life will still be waiting for you when you're ready.

All in all, I really believe you've taken this all in stride and I tip my hat to you. Most folks would not have the resolve that you do.

Keep us up to date on how you're doing.

When you do get fitted for a prosthetic.... Can I have the first dance?

Warmest Regards,
Mikey

Cool, so you have a fake leg? Can I see a picture? Email my myspace: http://www.myspace.com/kelseymaehurlburt last name is Hurlburt to add!

im sorry to hear about your amputation!
i havent gotten anything amputated so i cannot help there
but as far as itching goes, you can take bynadryl pills, they are ment to releive itching sensations
good luck!

what you are experiencing is called phantom pain, so you might want to do some research on that

I am not an amputee but my father is and my father in law is the head of prosthetics for the hospital.....Your body does not relize that your leg is gone yet. it is going to take awhile for your body to get used to it. you will sometimes still feel like it is there. It used to drive my father crazy. Just bare with it you will get used to it. and it is only your second day. You are going to be able to do so many things. You should see some of the prosthetic legs they have these days. they are better than your old leg. :) You are going to be able to do everything that you used to. Its just going to take time and some effort. You are really brave. I bet this is a hard thing to go through especially at your age. They make legs for moutain climbing and running and all kinds of stuff. GOOD LUCK

What you are feeling are phantom pains. Ask your doctor if Benedryl would help. I know the pains are not quite real, because the source is no longer there, but still this might be a help.

The amputees I have known, in overcoming the challenges, have become stronger and very talented in other ways.

Your contacts from the hospital should be able to put you in touch with your local amputee groups. The one-on-one contact with other amputees in your area is better support than we can give you online. It really helps to look someone in the eyes when you ask these questions.

How soon you're ready to go out and do things with your friends depends on how long it takes YOU PERSONALLY to overcome your hesitancy, and get your life back in gear. It will not take the same time as someone else, because you are an individual, and some individuals have stronger drives to return to normalcy than others do.

Sorry t hear abut this. The itching is from the healing. It will past in time. As for when you go out in public you do just like you always did head held high. Your arms and legs are not what make you person as for your friends only you will know when you are readily. GL

With itching, you have to have cotton balls and alcohol,
wet the cotton balls (depends how much thick you need)
then a flame for you to heat the cotton balls, then you
can use it to kill the germs and the itchiness . try it,

BEING BRAVE, that's all you need now . . you'll be
adjusted to it. As you go you'll become as normal
as others, you'll find other thins hard to do in the begin
ning but you'll have strength to do something else.

Just wanna tell you bout a lady I'm visiting as a voluntary
work,, she is to me is one of the loneliest situation in this
world, as she is completely blind, she's only sitting on
her chair during the day and lie down in bed at night . She
only feels what in front of her, at meal time when I'm there
with her, I feed her .. very very sad . .
so you still have so much to be thankful for. you still can
do so much though not as much as before..

So cheer up.. ok ?
.

Well, to make it stop itching just rub some lotion on it and if that doesn't work then take a shower and scrub your leg with a sponge with some moisterizing soap.
