Can you help me help my mother?

My mother has been addicted to amphetamines for over 30 year. My uncle and I have tried to get her help but she is on social security and from what I understand if they find out that she is an addict they will stop payment. I don鈥檛 want to just let her die but that鈥檚 all I can seem to do. Her mind is so far gone that to her anyone who tries to help her is really tiring to kill her and she has become violent and verbally abusive to anyone close enough to hear her . If anyone can help, please do and please pray for her. Thank you.

OK, first get rid of the notion that if you do A, then B will happen. So many people remain paralyzed in their lives because they decide that this or that thing will happen if they try to take action. It's a cop-out and in this case it isn't even true.

That said, an addict has to want to get help unless you take that choice away from her. This is sad, but you have to wait for her to hurt herself. Keep good records. Write down on a calendar each time something happens. Go to court and get guardianship, then take her to her doctor and tell the doctor she is addicted and must come OFF or you will sue him for over-prescribing.

First, and most important, you are not to blame for this situation, so don't beat yourself. There is one constant for those who are addicted: NO-ONE CAN RID THEMSELVES OF AN ADDICTION, UNLESS THEY WANT TO (I know, I'm an ex-addict). I suggest you counsel with your Mental Health professional, her physician or a Geriatric physician or anyone who is skilled in this type of health care. Don't listen to your best friend, wife, girlfriend, etc. God Bless You.
