Anyone had a amniocentesis??? Really worried!?

I am havin an amniocentesis as the odds against gettting a down syndrome child are 1/282 so i am a bit worried.. I am 34 years old and 70 kg!

I was 1/90 and 35yo I was scared but I needed to know. It wasn't as bad as I imagined it to be and it was a great relief when the results came back negative. You will be fine just rest for the rest of the day 1/282 are pretty good odds.

well it was about 22years ago but, yes it was presented to me as being very dangerous of course its scary but do exactly as they tell you and its over in couple of minutes, and its well worth it. also this day and age its just another daily precaution. good luck

Try not to worry.

As for the amnio, there is a minute risk of miscarriage. They quote something like a 1% chance, but that is a _global_ statistic. In a modern western hospital (which can be found outside of the west as well!) with trained staff using ultrasound to watch the baby, its very safe.

As for the odds of downs, try not to panic. My wife and I carry a genetic disorder which any baby of ours has a 1/4 chance of being affected by, and likely dying by 25. That's pretty stressful, so I know how you're feeling, but really, there's nothing you can do, so just carry on.

Personally, I wouldn't do the amnio. I was given the option when I had a positve AFP test when I was pregnant with my first child. I did not want to risk (even only 1%... too high for me) a miscarriage. My daughter was born with Down Syndrome, and let me tell you she REALLY is the best thing that could have happened to me. She is 5 now, and has taught me so much about life that I would have not known if not for her. I was 33 years old when she was born. No worries. Just do some research on the subject, and you will see that people with Down Syndrome can be very successful in life!
