Would you recommend that someone get amniocentesis just because they are preg. at 40 y/o?

no other major health risks except ex-heavy smoker

You should consult and work closely with your doctor! I think decisions like this should include your personal beliefs, your resources, and you and your partner weighing the risks and consequences. One answer rarely fits all.

yes.The later the pregnancy the more possibility for birth defects. But instead of amnio maybe get a CVS test (Chrionic villus sampling). It can be done earlier than amnio and can be done through the vagina and can be less painful.

i mean i guess if you must know, but then what?
worry? abortion? Also risks assc. with this produre are scary.
and the results are not always accurate. ask your dr.about statistics on false positives. without amnio, youll still recieve genetic counseling , plus youll get stage 2 ultrasounds, and they can show a lot, which will ease your mind.
ive personally never had it done,
healthy baby at 36yrs , pregow/healthy twins now at 39.

You need to consider whether the outcome of the test will affect your decision about the baby. Amnio is usually done to determine if there are birth defects. If you would consider aborting because of a birth defect, then you may want to think about having the amnio. If you wouldn't abort either way, it's probably not worth the risk. There is a risk of miscarring after an amnio. Also, if you do decide to have an amnio, you should know that the test results are not perfect -- they can give you a % chance that the baby has some defect, but sometimes they are completely wrong.
