Has anyone ever had an Amniocentesis done to them? is it painful? what is there to expect? was the outcome?

bad for you? please let me know

I asked, how it was going to feel. I was told it would feel like getting shot but no one in the room had personal experience. They weren't a lot of help.
However, I was very surprised that, I didn't experience a great deal of pain. It felt uncomfortable @ times. It was more an emotional release for me, I cried after the procedure was done.
My husband did noticed a leak when they withdrew the needle, this concerned me.
I went home & rested...& had very little activity for the next 3 days. My son is 14...
There are risks involved but the risks are less for an Amino then a CVS test.
*make sure your doc. is trained & uses ultra sound during the procedure (see how many he/she does annually)
During and immediately following the sampling procedure, you may experience dizziness, nausea, a rapid heartbeat, and cramping. Once past these immediate hurdles, the physician will send you home with instructions to rest and to report any complications requiring immediate treatment.
You might feel slight pain during amniocentesis. For the first day or so afterward, you may feel cramps like those during their menstrual period, but that is the most discomfort you might feel after the procedure. Bleeding, fever, or leaking of amniotic fluid after amniocentesis may occur and should signal a call to your doctor.
You need your husband or partner to take you, to hold your hand.
I wish you the best.... :)

yes. It isn't very painful it looks and sounds worse then it is. most people are just fine during it. just don't watch. what to expect are healthy results :) it isn't painful but it is uncomfortable. good luck

I had one at 35 weeks and it was not pleasant. Breathe carefully and don't look at the needle. Try not to move around because the doctor will be using the ultrasound to make sure he doesn't hit the baby. Unfortunately, there is a risk that it will cause your water to break. Be prepared. Mine broke because of it. I don't want to scare you but you need to know the truth. Don't be shocked when you see the needle. It's HUGE! Think horse injection.
