How dangerous is a amniocentesis?

im trying to see if i can do this to see if my ex or my new boyfriend is the father. i feel horrible about this and i cant remember the exact dates.

thanks for all your help ladies

Well amnio is generally safe, though it does carry a small risk of infection and a smaller risk of miscarriage. If you're concerned about its safety, you can either opt for another method of determining the fetus's father, called Chorionic Villi Sampling, though this method is just as invasive, or you can wait until the baby is born and get a simple DNA test from a saliva swab.

its a bit risky i mean u'd really wanna ask ur doctor how many times he's dum it and how many were succesful. in sum cases the baby can bleed 2 much or sumtimes d sac can burst... its quite risky for the baby my advice wud be 2 waut untill the birth 2 get a dna test. gud luk

It's dangerous, but it depends on why you are doing it. In your case, I would tell you to just wait until the baby is born and they can do a cheek swab. If there was a major risk that your baby could have a horrible birth defect, then an amniocentesis is worth the risk so you can better prepare for the birth...

Girl, get out a calendar and do the math. Do some seriously hard thinking about who is most likely the father. If you need to, bring the calendar to the doctors with you and they can help you work it out.

Some lessons are really hard to learn...

NO! That procedure is not for paternaty. You should only get it done if you already have a high risk pregnancy and are testing for genetic abnormalities. It can be very harmful to the fetus.

This test is performed in the second trimester, anywhere from the 14th-20th weeks of pregnancy. During this procedure, the doctor uses ultrasound to guide a thin needle into your uterus, through your abdomen. The needle draws out a small amount of amniotic fluid, which is tested. Risks include a small chance of harming the baby and miscarriage. Other side effects may include cramping, leaking of amniotic fluid, and vaginal bleeding. A doctor's consent is needed to do this procedure for paternity testing.

An alternative can be a Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): This test consists of a thin needle or tube which a doctor inserts from the vagina, through the cervix, guided by an ultrasound, to obtain chorionic villi. Chorionic villi are little finger-like pieces of tissue attached to the wall of the uterus. The chorionic villi and the fetus come from the same fertilized egg, and have the same genetic makeup. This testing can be done earlier in pregnancy from the 10th-13th weeks. A doctor's consent is needed to do this procedure for paternity testing.

Both procedures carry dangers for your baby. Talk this over with your partner and see if there is an absolute need to know who the father is right now or if it can wait till the baby is born. And talk about both procedures with your ob/gyn.
