How do you overcome soul numbing terror/fear when it is not irrational?

I was abducted a long time ago and never got rescued. I grew up with my abductors and they were extremely abusive. I lived in fear/terror every day of my life from the ago of 2 1/2 on. I finally escaped when I married my husband about 9 years ago. I have been through therapy with a variety of therapists, psychologists, & psychiatrists, starting before I escaped. Until 2002 I had almost total amnesia for my entire life. In 2002 I remembered from age 9 up to my current age. This last November I remembered everything from before age 9. My whole life I have lived in soul numbing terror. I still do. I know that I am safe and it is over and yet I am still terrified. I don't know how to make the terror go away. Any ideas?

I can understand what you are saying. I went through unforgivable amounts of pain as a child and have been through the stage you are in. What is happening is your brain is finally free to remember and deal with what has happened to you. All of your life has been spent suffering, you've had no time to mentally recover from it. It builds up. So, right now all of these years of pain and fear are on top of you at once. Unfortunately, as everything in life, it will take time. Eventually your mind will whittle everything down to a problem you can help it tackle. The most important thing is to FEEL what you are feeling. Completely experience it. Let it out and let it go. If you are scared and you want to cry, cry. If you are angry and want to hit something, attack your pillows and couch cushions with everything you've got. I have faith that you will make it and find a way to be you. If you ever need a kind ear, feel free to contact me(just go to my profile). My thoughts will be with you. :^)

First you need to identify exactly what it is that you are afraid of, then confront it. Good luck

You are asking non professionals to solve a problem for you, who we barely know. I know you've been to a ton of professionals, but you are going to need to keep looking for one that can help you. I promise you it will be worth it once you find the right one. Good luck.

by the way u sound,u might need more therapy.
also u might want to consider sendin cops on your abductors.it might help to know that the bad guys are behind bars.

I am not a Doctor, but when you have suffered through so much, and it still causes you agony, fear, and terror, it sounds very much like you are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
PTSD is a disorder that develops in individuals, to people who have went through a terrible traged or traumatic even, ( used to hear it most related to veterans after coming home from a war) but now it is more well known that there are other trauma situations that can cause it. You certainly have suffered, an unimaginable trauma. Keep seeking out a therapist who can work it out with you, (I KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS TO DO) I've tried to treat myself doing research, joining online or offline groups for people who suffer with disorders like PTSD, and knowing that someone can understand, and knowing you aren't alone, can help you some. Look up some research online, and read the symptoms of PTSD. See if you feel that you have some of the symptoms, and then if you feel it's PTSD, when you go to a therapist, suggest it to him, and that you want to WORK THROUGH IT, not take Medication that just numbs it, but never heals the wound. PLEASE REMEMBER I am NOT a Doctor, but I've been on the cycle you are on, and I know that trying to find "effective" professional help is very difficult to do. Also, when you talk to a Psychiatrist, or Therapist, don't just settle for whatever they tell you is wrong, especially if all they want to do is hand you a pill. I've ran the whole cycle that you have described, and then I've been told I'm a lost cause, however, I finally found someone who understood my problem, and worked with me, and I read everything I could get my hands on to learn how to help myself. I wish you well, if you would like to e-mail me for more info you can reach me at Brew40fw@msn.com, and Please keep trying, fighting your way through it, and not letting it destroy your life. You are a very courageous and strong person. You would not be here today, if you weren't. Remember the good things about yourself. Remember you survived this, and you are still alive. I hope you will find someone who will work with you, and you keep up the fight. I pray you will find someone that can truly help you through your terrible tragedy.

I dunno if it a help but its help me with some of my fears and cured my fear of mouldy food. Its called Emotional freedom technique. It explains it better here at these links.
