Conscious sedation?

I'm having an upper endo next week...with conscious sedation that includes versed.

Will I actually sleep with conscious sedation, or will I be awake during the procedure and simply not remember what happened?

Also, does anyone know WHY one of the properties of versed is that it produces amnesia? Is it used specifically because medical people don't want patients to remember what happened...or is amnesia just a by product of a drug that has other important/effective qualities?

Thanks.

1. Minimal sedation (anxiolysis) is a drug-induced state during which patients respond normally to verbal commands.

2. Moderate sedation/analgesia (conscious sedation) is a drug-induced depression of consciousness during which patients respond purposefully to verbal commands, either alone or accompanied by light tactile stimulation.

3. Deep sedation/analgesia is a drug-induced depression of consciousness during which patients cannot be easily aroused but respond purposefully following repeated or painful stimulation.

4. Anesthesia consists of general anesthesia and spinal or major regional anesthesia. It does not include local anesthesia. General anesthesia is a drug-induced loss of consciousness during which patients are not arousable, even by painful stimulation.

You are having number 2, which is normal. You will be out for the count and I doubt they will talk to you or stimulate you. This is normal for the upper endo, as the procedure is fast and they do not have problems with looking after you as you wake up. I had the endo without any sedation, provided the Surgeon allowed me to see the monitor, a compromise. I was so hungry I are the camera tube, was on my side as he did whatever he was doing. As soon as he finished his inspection he told the Nurses to roll me over onto my back and hey presto, one TV, with my intestine in full color. As he pulled the tube back he told me what we were viewing. Then he stopped in my stomach to take a biopsy, lost the first one so took another, then pulled the tube back and again told me what we were seeing and then the tube was out. I sat up and gave the biggest BELCH, very embarassing I did apologise but it seems it was from the gas they use to inflate the GI to get the camera in. I did not choke was able to breath all the way through although it was sign language, thumbs up if I understaood or thumbs down if I was sore. It did make me wonder why they put Patients to sleep in the first place, but then as I was told Patients PANIC and if you PANIC it causes them more problems, so they prefer to knock you out. The drug of choice is the one where you will not feel anything, let alone remember anything and will come back normally, so they do not have to monitor you. Good Luck
