Amenorrhea, PCOS and fertility question?

I have been dignosed with amenorrhea and PCOS. Does anyone know if I can conceive normally and what are the best drugs to start having a period?

Amenorrhea means "not having periods" which may or may not resolve itself when your PCOS is treated. Many of us with PCOS don't ovulate normally, which also means that we can't get pregnant without some help. Sometimes this means fertility medications, and sometimes it means medications like glucophage (metformin) which helps control insulin, and sometimes a part of PCOS is insulin resistance.

Whether or not you'll be able to concieve normally is something that only you and your doctor can determine, once you know if you're ovulating, normally. Do remember though, that the risk of first trimester miscarriage is incredibly high (something like 45%) in women with PCOS, and yet, with metformin, it's cut significantly; so much so that the risk of miscarriage falls into the range of normal-the same as women without PCOS. There was a study published in February of this year in the New England Journal of Medicine suggesting that the best low intervention methods for women with PCOS who are trying to get pregnant involve using a combination of metformin and Clomid together. There are women who need more involved intervention though, and some who need none at all.

If you're not ovulating, or you're having cycle issues, there are a number of different medications that are used. Sometimes, insulin regulating medications are used-these tend to be effective whether or not there's an issue of insulin resistance. Sometimes, oral contraceptives (birth control pills) are used, if someone isn't trying to have a baby at that point. Your doctor, who should have your lab results will be able to help figure out what the best medications to help restore your cycle, shrink cysts if you've got large or painful ones and, when you're ready, help you get pregnant.

Are you severly overweight or underweight? Balancing that out is your best bet to get rid of the amenorrhea. If you are overweight it can also help with the PCOS. With pcos you don't ovulate regularly but it is possibly to ovulate. Just getting healthy will help things out. If you try to get pg for a year and don't then they will begin to suggest meds. Even a perfectly healthy women only has a 20% chance of conceiving on any given month.
