Amenorrhea?

Does amenorrhea really lead to bone density problems? I'm in high school and run year round, cross country, winter track, and spring track. My period has never been very regular but I haven't gotten it in 6 months now which has never happened before. I'm a healthy weight, 122lb at 5'7". I've actually gained 4 pounds since this summer. I guess it's just the frequent running.
I've read some things online about amenorrhea leading to osteoperosis. Why is that?

Not having your period means your hormones are out of balance, which can lead to bone density loss, fractures, and osteoporosis. A woman's hormones regulate the flow of minerals in and out of her bones.

"If periods have stopped completely for more than 6 months, you should be examined by a physician to rule out any medical condition. Absence of periods for more than one year can cause loss of bone density and increase the risk of stress fractures during sports. It can also increase the risk of osteoporosis later in life."

A chart I found says an athletic woman who's your height should weight 126 to 165 pounds. In my opinion, you should discuss your situation with a physician.

122 at 5'7' is not a healthy weight. Regardless of your weight you do not have a normal amount of body fat that regulates your periods. And yes lack of can cause osteoporosis, etc. Estrogen affects calcium uptake.
