What can cause my amenorrhea?

I'm 16 almost 17. (started period at 14). 99 pounds, 5'3. not very physically active (light work out 3-4 times a week). Vegetarian. No period for 7-8 months. Any ideas?

Well, you're not pregnant, right? ^^
As the menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones (estrogen and progesterone) it is possible that you are experiencing a hormonal imbalance.

It could also be caused by physiologic factors that prevent your ovaries from releasing egg cells. Since it's been 7-8 months, it is best that you contact your gyne to have your condition checked.

Sounds like a hormone imbalance.

Go to the doctors, I had the opposite problem of really long periods that were sooo heavy and painful. They put me on the pill at 17 and it was brilliant, solved all my problems, my periods are now almost pain free and very regular. You doctor will be able to help you so pay them a visit, you can ask for a female doctor too.

Your BMI based on your weight and height is 17.5 which is sort of on the boundary of underweight. Since you've had your period before this is a case of secondary amenorrhea. There's plenty of things on the differential - but I think its safe to rule out hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia, and PCOS. You might want to try a pregnancy test if you believe this could be an issue. The most likely cause in your case is probably due to the exercise and the low weight as both of these influences can affect your hormone levels. Here's a good resource if you're interested.
