What is Amenorrhea? |
What is Amenorrhea? The absence of menstrual periods is called amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea is the failure to start having a period by the age of 16. Secondary amenorrhea is more common and refers to either the temporary or permanent ending of periods in a woman who has menstruated normally in the past. Many women miss a period occasionally. Amenorrhea occurs if a woman misses three or more periods in a row. Amenorrhea means not or without having a period. Amenorrhoea (BE) or amenorrhea (AmE) is the absence of a menstrual period in a woman of reproductive age. Physiologic states of amenorrhoea are seen during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding). Amenorrhea is the word used to describe the absence of periods in a woman who should be getting them regularly. Something going on in the body is interfering with the menstrual cycle and preventing it, It can be caused by drugs that block the natural hormone pattern that triggers regular periods. Oftentimes female atheletes who are in intensive training might suffer amenorrhea due to the sheer physicality of their training, which can create a hormonal imbalance, and may increase their natural level of male hormone testosterone. |
