I'm doing an essay on a poem about Alzheimer's disease (Bob Hicok's "Alzheimer's"), I was wondering if anyone could give me some basic detail on the disease's effects. I'd also appreciate if anyone could give a statistic about how likely one is to attain this disease at a later age. Thanks The disease steals your loved one long before they die. They begin by forgetting little things, getting lost easily and not being able to think of the particular words they want. They often become caricatures of themselves. If they are funny, they become hilarious. If they are short tempered, they become even worse. Most patients are more irritable in the beginning because they are terribly frustrated. Often times it is passed from mother to son to daughter to son etc. I don't know percentages but it is more often diagnosed after the age of 65. |
