Are there conditions other than Alzheimer's that can cause memory loss?

Sucks getting old.

My Mom's been suffering with short-term memory loss for the past 10 years or so. (She's 64.) When it began 10 years ago she noticed and she was trying to stimulate her mind with word puzzles and stuff, but it's getting worse and she's in complete denial now.

I think she might be getting depressed too. She's sleeping for 9 1/2 hours at night, plus an afternoon nap and several cat naps throughout the day.

Her and my (retired) Dad are fighting all the time because he thinks she's gotten lazy. He wants to take a trip and she doesn't want to go. (Not that she's remember much of it anyway once they were home.)

My Dad went through Alzheimer's with his Mom (until 1989) and I think he's terrified he'll have to go through it all again with his wife.

I know Alzheimer's treatment has improved in the past 17 years, but are there other treatable conditions that can cause memory loss too? She was only 54 when it started, which seems young for Alzheimer's. Thanks!

Obviously memory is a neurological function. There could be a number of things associated with her STM loss. Why hasn't she gone to a doctor yet if it's been that long? Seems like something you'd want to mention.

they need to do more than hang around the house all day..get them involved in life

People with major depression can suffer memory loss.
