How can I best help a friend with Parkinson's?

His wife has Alzheimer's and is in the hospital for some tests so I am taking care of him for a few hours a day. Is there anything specific I could do to help him besides keeping him company and keeping his spirits up? He suffers from tremors in his hands and needs to use a walker. I was thinking I might be able to install some railings or supports around his house where he might need them. Any other suggestions?

Sounds like you've got some good ideas. My father has a balance problem and can't walk on his own.

Railings in the tub, around the toilet (don't forget a sturdy one for pulling himself up), in the halls, etc.

Have you tried asking if he needs any help that you haven't thought of? There might be something he would like to do by himself but isn't able to and doesn't think there's a way to do it.

Also, keeping him company and keeping his spirits up is a really big help in and of itself.

Railings and supports are a great idea!! He's lucky to have you looking out for him. You can check out eating utensils, cups, etc that make it easier for him to eat and drink with his tremor. Has anyone checked to see that he Has a power of attorney in place? The time will likely come when he cannot make good decisions for himself. If he can have someone in place who has authority to make decisions when he can't, his life will be better down the road. Parkinson's folks usually eventually develop a dementia also. Some of the medications for the tremors can cause a psychosis which really interferes with their perception of reality and causes them great discomfort.
That poor family. Wife with Alzheimer's and him with Parkinson's. My heart goes out to them both.
