Altzheimer's disease / euthanasia? |
If you had no spouse and no children & you suffered from alzheimer's disease would you choose to live through the disease in some institution or commit some quick & painlessform of suicide (like freezing to death with some sleeping pills) while you have enough mind power for that. What would you do and why? Regardless of whether I had a spouse, or children, or both. I would not hesitate to choose. I would rather end my life peacefully and with dignity, than become a burden to them. None of these, visits to a woman who used to be their mother, or wife, who now sits in a chair remembering the early years, slowly forgetting those things and people most precious to her. It's as painful for those of us nursing these people, as it is to their own families, especially when the family visits become less frequent, as they often do. You are held responsible for everything you do in your life, so why then, shouldn't you have the responsibility to end the life you have been responsible for over all those years when you decide it is time? The debate continues anew, I see. if you had advanced Alzeiheimer's you would not remember where you put the pills, you would not know what sleeping pills are, and you could not swallow... I believe in death with dignity. My life has been full of near insurmountable situations. I have contemplated passing a lot. I do not wish to die at this time. I will keep going for as long as life is tolerable. I have a living will that expresses my views on life support. If at some time the pain I live with daily becomes intolerable I will talk with all my family and express my love for each and every one of them, inject 500 units of regular insulin and go to bed. Painless and clean. No one will be traumatized by finding me with the blood and gore of a typical 12 Gage suicide. There is far more to my reasoning than can be relayed here. I am not trying to convince anyone of what is right or wrong. If you have the energy to debate this or any other life or death issue I strongly suggest you adopt a terminal orphan to bestow your love for life on. When that child passes adopt another. Do this for the rest of your life and you will surely have made this world a better place. |
