How long can someone in the last stages of alzheimers last with no food or water?

My Grandma is very very ill. She is in the very last stages of Alzheimer's and the family wants to stop feeding her and stop liquids all together, as of today. I am trying to figure out how long it will take (not to sound mean) cause I need to start making plans to get to another state for the funeral.

My Grandma is very very ill. She is in the very last stages of Alzheimer's and the family wants to stop feeding her and stop liquids all together, as of today. I am trying to figure out how long it will take (not to sound mean) cause I need to start making plans to get to another state for the funeral. I know they shouldn't do this but it is a decision my Grandpa, Aunts and Uncles made. Now I have to prepare myself and my family for what is to come. I live two states away from the rest of the family so I need to figure this out for the funeral. I am not going to make it down there before cause I don't want to see her like that and I don't want to see the family members who are doing this to her, I will see them at the funeral cause it is my Grandma, but other than that no more part of their family. This one act has showed me what they are truely like. They didn't even involve my Dad (their borther in this). Dad's siblings sent him an email telling him what they were doing. CRUEL.

An average healthy person can survive weeks without food, and a day or two without water.

that's called murder and it's against the law

a few days. is she on a feeding tube? Or are you not going to give her food of any type?

It can take ages. My cousin died this summer of cancer and had food and water withheld at the end and she took nearly two weeks to die. I think its because she was having regular injections of morphine and anti-convulsants and they were hydrating her slightly. Theoretically it is supposed to be only about 3-4 days without liquids. It is hard to tell as well with old people as their systems can be very frail.

about 8 days, max

My grandmother passed away almost exactly 1 year ago from Alzheimer's. It took her about 3 days to pass after they shut her systems down. My condolences to you.

You mean they're cutting off the feeding tube, right?

Just make sure to tell your family that they still want to tell the hosptal to use all comfort procedures done that are possible. Just because she can't communicate right now, doesn't mean she can't feel pain. Make sure they get her on very strong pain meds. "Happy meds" if possible, to ease the pain and suffering.

I'm sorry for your loss. May your grandmother find peace.

You should ask the consultant as every case is different. Then arrive in time. But usually the funeral is arranged a number of days after so its not such a problem.
