Kitty Diabetes:( Help!? |
I found out about two months ago that my oldest cat has feline diabetes. Since then I've been giving him one brand and flavor of food as recommended by the vet. I don't want to scare him by putting a needle through his little arm just to give him medicine. I had to do that with my last cat and it was heck. Especially for him. He's 13 in human years. So I think he's old in kitty years. He still has a big appetite but is slowly getting skinny. And drinks water a bunch too. So do you know of any natural, healthier alternatives to regular vet-prescribed diabestes medicine? Our doctor's sweet and all, but she costs an arm and a leg! Plus I don't want to scare him or anything... I understand that it would be hard to have to give your cat daily injections of insulin, however as others have said without it you are slowly killing your cat. I know when I became a diabetic before treatment I felt so sick and horrible, I was thankful that two injections a day could make me feel so much better. I'm sure your cat feels horrible too; he is suffering. If you can't give him the treatment he needs, maybe you should have him put to sleep so he doesn't have to suffer. That would be the humane thing to do. He will die without the medication. A friend of mine who used to work for a veterinarian says cat diabetes is very stressful on the cat and the owner. Her cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. The reason your cat is skinny and eats too much and is always thirsty, is because he is dying. the fact that he is loosing weight and drinking a lot means that he needs insulin. his body is slowly turning on itself because it cannot use the food he is eating, not giving him shots is going to hurt him more than a shot once or twice a day. right now, i hate wording it this way but its the truth, you are slowly killing him. please either get the shots or put him down. No, all creatures need glucose for energy, even diabetics, it is just that there is no insulin to move it into the cells where it is needed, so it stays in the blood, where it is useless. Either that or there is insulin with resistance (insulin that doesn't work right in the person/cat's body). You could maybe try a university vet clinic and see if they are cheaper?? |
