Why is Soma always prescribed with pain medication? What is the purpose in mixing it with the pain medication?

I heard it helps as a muscle relaxant but I also heard that the combination make th pain medicine work better. My father broke his neck and had to have part of his hip taken out and put in his neck to prevent future complications. He was told to take percocet and soma, but he does not like taking the Soma all the time because it puts him out and he dosn't like that . He feels its to strong taking them both. He has to take the pain medication because of th pain and he is ok like that, but with the Soma he only takes it at night now because its too strong he says. So my question is does the soma make the pain medication stronger or is it a cobination type thing where they both work together? And could he stop taking the soma, because the doc said the they work toghether. Is there a alternative? Thank you for listening. I think the reason the Soma is putting your father out is cause it is not only a muscle relaxer but it is a sedative and that is what is probably making him feel down and out!!!!! Most docs here in the US don't order Soma too much any more..................

Carisoprodol (Soma) is a muscle relaxant but it is not prescribed much any longer as it is metabolized to meprobamate and it is possible to become 'addicted' to Soma. None of the other muscle relaxants have this problem. If the Soma works by itself there is no need to prescribe pain medications. Pain medications are usually prescribed with Soma because Soma does not typically work by itself. I personally never prescribe a muscle relaxant without an anti inflammatory pain medication.

mixing these ingredients is sometimes more effective than straight pain killers.
