How do you convince someone in denial to take psych meds?

A family member keeps going through the cycle of getting put in the hospital and forced to take psych meds then coming out and abruptly quitting the meds. Each time they get worse and won't listen to reason. They refuse to talk to counselors, psychcologists or psychiatrists. We think the meds and/or the repeated abrupt discontinuation may be causing the psychosis or withdrawal symptoms that put them back in the hospital. Most experts agree the only way off the meds is to slowly taper off them over a period of time, but that can't happen unless they agree to take them in the first place. Even if alternative treatments involving vitamins, etc. are used the meds have to be tapered off to get off them correctly, otherwise you get disastrous side effects. Is there any branch of medicine, knowledge or expertise in getting through to someone suffering from denial, psychosis or withdrawal?

AS to convincing them to take meds when they are in denial, you can't. I really hate to break this to you, but unless your family member acknowledges that there is something wrong and that they want to get well, they'll just continue to ignore you and remain in denial.

Psychiatry is the only branch of medicine to really deal with this as specialists in this field are trained in the use of medications, mental conditions and the effects the drugs will have. Each case is individual, so you can't really trust what you read on the Internet because it is generic even if it is accurate. Individual cases should seek a personal consultation. Good luck...

Good for them they stand up to idiot doctors.I hope they finally contact law enforcement and put you where you belong in jail

Listen, I have lived this one... My brother has mental problems and for yrs has denied meds. When someone, an adult does not want to do it, they just wont. These people who deny are the people who really need them. There is nothing you can do, short of committing someone. This will tear your family apart. You have to make a choice to keep going on an up hill battle and never winning or cut them out of your life. If someone is trying to help themselves, I will go out of my way for them and do all I can. When they refuse to help themselves its over. You can not help them. I have cut my brother out of my life, it has been 4yrs now. I can not take the abuse and the craziness again. If he wants to admit it and say that he needs help, I am there. A psychiatrist told me one time this is the only thing left for me to do. I did it for my own sanity.
