Alcoholism ...?

I'm sick of people saying it's not a disease. It's as much as of a disease as cancer is. This whole conflict started when I was on a website. The girl was saying that she hates alcholics. I got very offened because my step dad was an alcholic, I left comments in her comment box complaining about it.

So tell me.. Alcholism IS a disease, right?

By the way, the site is --

Alcoholism is a disease. My mom was an alcoholic, growing up was very difficult, I swore to myself I would never put my kids through what I went through. However, my oldest daughter is now an alcoholic. My family has a history of this disease.

Alcoholism is characterized by a preoccupation with alcohol and impaired control over alcohol intake. Alcoholism is a chronic, often progressive disease. Left untreated, alcoholism can be fatal.

Yes it IS a disease!!!!

you're totally right - they finally came to realize that any addiction is a disese...

Oh yes it is. My husband is an alcohlic. It is a disease. Ive learned all about in my fifteen years of marraige.

Yes it is a disease like any other diseases around

Alcoholism is a disease because it changes the way your body works. It effects your liver, heart, and your brain function. The problem though is that it is a preventable disease that becomes harder to prevent the longer the alcholic drinks.

You're sick of people saying it isn't because you hate hearing/reading the truth. It isn't a disease.....PERIOD.
You're bitter because your step father was an alcoholic and you hate the idea that he had a CHOICE to drink or not. It's easier for you to believe he could do nothing about it. Guess what, he could have done something about it.

Do you really believe people would CHOOSE to have cancer? Cancer and alcoholism are not the same. Cancer is not a choice. I don't choose to pick up a bottle or glass of cancer. People CHOOSE to pick up a bottle or glass of alcohol. They have the ability to turn away from it. They can say no. THEY CHOOSE NOT TO because they lack will power and discipline.

Alcoholism is a learned behavior and not hereditary. Children observe form their parents and believe it to be the proper method.

You can complain and leave all the comments you want but it doesn't erase your bitterness and denial to reality. Alcoholism is NOT a disease. Those who believe so are in denial, mostly because they have a loved one who is an alcoholic and it sucks to admit the truth that they have a choice.

OK....Let the negative ratings prevail.
