Alcoholism is not a Disease, Am I Right or Am I Right?

I Am sick of people saying Alcoholism is a disease, Cancer is a Disease, Alcoholism is a choice! I just want peoples thoughts on this subject.

It is not a disease. And I am sick and tired of people who want to drink themselves to death taking the better things from us sane people. Everything they need to get better takes from us. The government puts money towards their AAA meetings. And if their stupidity led to homelessness, they are taking money out of our taxes also to eat and have a place to stay in a shelter or maybe even more.

And medical, they somehow get on waiting lists for a liver that someone else needs more that did not hurt thier liver and now they must wait even longer. While the alcoholic has a new liver to destroy.

In my area alot of the alcoholics get more help than they deserve. It is just not fair. I do not pity them. If they want to drink themselves to death then let them. We do not need their drunken asses anyway.

I wish that more people agreed with me on this topic.

I had a feeling I gave the wrong amount of letters. Thank you!!! Report It

First of all, AA is a self sustaining establishment that receives no money from the government. Alcoholism been proven to not only be a disease, but a reversed allergic reaction. Would you choose to ruin your body, lose your family, home and job? Report It

Shut up. Alcholism is a disease. Look it up. Report It

It is a bad disease formed by habit.

You are WRONG, my friend... Alcoholism is a disease because there is a genetic predisposition to it.

The DSM IV classification system recognises alcoholism as a disease, look it up! I am a recognised alcoholic and am about to enter university to study psychology and sociology. My father sadly died because of drink.
Nevertheless I became a poly-drug abuser and spent time in the priory. You are right, it is a choice but for some people it is a very difficult choice and addiction is some experience I can tell you. I still look at it as research and perhaps one day will publish a book!

If I can be of any help.

I agree with you. I do not think of it as a disease. It is an addiction. A lot of people say "just quit" but an alcoholic can not just quit. They have a dependency to it, and go through physical withdraws from alcohol. Even with these withdrawl symptoms it is still, as you put, a choice. It is something that can be overcome with support.

With enough drinking it can bring on diseases. For example drinking can create sirrosis (sp?) of the liver, or obesity which can lead to heart problems etc.

But, an alcoholic CAN quit. In the end they always have a choice...even though their physical and emotional cravings may be telling them otherwise.

alcoholism is an addiction. like crack , cocaine or heroin. these addictions have a genetic predisposition so to speak

I think that it is a symptom of a future disease that will occur if you don't die because of how it affect people when drunk in excess
