How can I improve my memory?????

I have abused drugs and alcohol for many years, and it's affected my short-term memory. How can I try to improve it now that I've been clean and sober for 8 months, and going STRONG....I am a server, and I tend to forget people's names more than anything, but I always remember what they order....HELP!!!!!

Congrats on the sobriety...continue on being strong-willed. I would make up names for people, according to what you see about them, you know, like if someone's hair is spiked, call him "spike" to that effect....take your time and enjoy your new life. As long as you remember what they want for dinner who cares about their names...

Best thing...
Your short term memory cells can usually only hold about 10 events max in clarity...

So start small and remember 3 numbers in sequence, no more than 3 digits for each number. Increase to 5 numbers with 3 digits...then go back to 3 numbers but with 4 digits...etc.

Repeat each day for 30 minutes.

Give it a few weeks before you notice a change.

Ginseng can work, but best to go 'herb free' unless you're not seeing the results.

Good luck!

you can try memory games testing your short term memory or you can try just saying names and then trying to remenber them by writing themdown

Memorize things (like poems, songs, speeches...whatever).

It's been proven that memorizing actually enlarges the part of the brain that is used for memory. For example, a study of London taxi drivers showed that their ability to remember things was much higher than average because they have to memorize all the streets in London. That's a lot of streets.

I recommend memorizing the basics like the Gettysburg Address, some short poems, and number sequences. If you really want to challenge yourself, memorize The Raven, by Edgar Allen Poe.

Also use magnesium to decrease aluminum in the brain.

First of all, congratulations on being clean and sober for 8 months!

Do you have trouble remembering other things as well as names? Some people just aren't good at remembering names, so this might not really be a short-term memory issue.

i firmly believe in memory exercises such as ones listed by others. I do not believe in taking supplements unless your diet is really that poor. I have memory problems and i have found the more i use my memory the more i can remember. i use little rhyming words said to myself when someone gives me their name, or something funny about them such as "suzy big hair" its what works for me.

short term memory loss is common in alcohol and drug addiction and I don't know that it can be restored.Try working crossword puzzles.

I'm no doctor but short-term memory (from what I have heard) is something that can't be cured. So as far as I know, your stuck with it.

Try biofeedback - associative memory techniques- and thave a look at the resources below.
