the government has mandated several devices, catalytic converters for cars and trucks and soon diesel vehicles, as well.
also, the government mandates smoke stack scrubbers for certain industries.
the government is also mandating and the public is requiring vehicle manufactures to produce more fuel economic vehicles, as well as, gasoline/diesel alternatives.
some cities have very good public transportation which reduces overall pollution and centralizes control over the vehicles.
tires are being made which reduce friction, which increases fuel economy, which decreases air pollution.
waste water must be treated before it is released into streams and other bodies of water.
more efficient fertilizers are being found which reduce run-off.
Plants are being engineered to be more drought and bug tolerant to reduce watering and insecticide.
noise levels are going to be mandated for boats.
boat motors are being switched from high polluting 2-cycle engines to more efficient and cleaner 4-cycle engines.
