Does it make any sense to run air purifier with the windows open, if my main concern is pollution from outside

I live in a very polluted Chinese city and think an air purifier would help keep my lungs AND my house cleaner. I'm not sure, though, having my windows closed all the time is a good idea either. Thank you for taking your time to share your suggestions.

Here is what I would do. Run the air purifier with the windows closed. But If there is a time during the day or evening that you know the pollution outside is less than other times, then open the windows to let new air in. Close them, and turn the unit back on.

Also, please make sure the air purifier you are running is large enough for the size of your house. For instance, small air purifier units are often not large enough to clean the air well.
We have three Friedrich air cleaners (floor units), one in the common room, and one in each bedroom.
They can completely clear tobacco smoke out a 12 x 14 foot room in under 20 minutes. But they are expensive (US $350-400 per unit). And we clean the filters often.

Probably not. Some of the purified air is going back out the window.
