I am told that agent orange spraying in vietnam caused me to be a diabetic. How did it cause this?

Please don't tell me Agent Orange didn't cause me to be a diabetic as the goverment has given me 10% from the V.A.My question is how did the spraying of Agent Orange cause Diabetices in so many Nam Vets. Thanks for ur help.

Anything is possible in medicine and science. I mean anything. People have been known to be allergic to Benedryl! So Agent Orange causing diabetes...possible. My guess would be not, but what I would do would be to research for any studies linking Agent Orange to physical harm in humans. I would go to my local university library and research things to take to a lawyer. The lawyer can then review your research and tell you if any other proceedings have occured due to agent orange. Good luck sir.

I'm sorry I'm not sure. But we were doing the Vietnam War unit in school, and Agent Orange was a chemical sprayed to reveal Vietcong hideouts. I think we also talked about it when it was sprayed on people it had weird effects. I guess being diabetic is. I'm sorry if I didn't answer your question. :/

I doubt anyone here could answer your question. I doubt the govenment will either.
There were several lawsuits against the companies who produced Agent Orange. I suggest you find those court cases and read about them. I'm sure they will give you a better answer then anyone here will.
Two of the companies that were sued were Dow Chemical and Monsanto.

If it caused your pancreas to stop producing insulin, my guess would be that it somehow got your beta cells. If you still produce insulin, but your body can't use it, then I really have no idea.

Short Answer:
It is not Agent Orange alone that caused the diabetes in some Vietnam Vets, it is only one of the possible causes involved with Vietnam and the chemicals used.

Long Answer:
In April 2000, VA asked IOM to broaden an ongoing study to include the results of the military's latest report on Agent Orange, which found a high rate of adult-onset diabetes among Vietnam veterans who participated in spraying operations.

In October 2000, NAS issued a report that found "limited / suggestive evidence" of a link between adult-onset (Type 2) diabetes and herbicides used in Vietnam, including Agent Orange. The IOM report concluded that other traditional risk factors for diabetes -- heredity, weight and sedentary lifestyle -- far outweigh the risks of Agent Orange.

Still, based upon that IOM report, VA Secretary Anthony Principi announced he was directing the addition of Type 2 diabetes to the list of presumptive conditions associated with herbicide exposure. Rules permitting eligible veterans to apply for and receive compensation for adult-onset (Type 2) diabetes went into effect July 9, 2001. VA officials estimate that more than 178,000 veterans might qualify for disability compensation under the new rules within five years.
