Touching my toes?

I've asked this before but no one gave me a good answer, so I'm trying again.

The deal is that I'm a 31-year-old guy and I'm pretty out of shape, but the thing that bugs me the most is that I've never been able to touch my toes. I'm a good 6-7 inches from being able to do it. A personal trainer I once had said that I probably had "adhesions" in my hamstrings and that it was doubtful I'd ever be able to touch my toes just by stretching. She felt that massage therapy was my best bet.

So my question is, does that sound reasonable? Or do you know any radical solo techniques that might work for me? Again, please don't just tell me to do the standard stretching routine - I've tried it for months at a time and it didn't do squat.

Thanks for your help!

I don't know. Get a second opinion from a physical therapist.
